How to Foster Resilience

In early winter, The Boston Club, New England’s largest organization of executive and professional women, asked me to moderate one of their annual signature events, the 2020 Community Salute. The organization’s mission is to connect, support and recognize women leaders. So, I enthusiastically agreed.
In March, when we learned the event would be cancelled, one of the panelists – Dr. Amy Gagliardi, a psychiatrist at McLean Hospital – and I volunteered to lead a virtual conversation.
Amy and I wanted to go beyond the usual tips and strategies for managing through Covid, which are now available in abundance from a variety of sources.
So, we focused our conversation on what science tells us about fostering emotional growth during and after times of stress. We discussed the science behind building resiliency and shared evidence-based practices for doing so, which includes creating connections, helping others and practicing gratitude. Practicing these behaviors will help you manage through the crisis and – over the long term – contribute to a high-performing culture.
